Error-prone Henman beaten in first round

The British No 1, who was seeded 15th, made 33 unforced errors and also served four double faults to give Rios a helping hand in gaining revenge. Although the players stood at 2-2 in head-to-matches going into this tournament, Henman had won their last two encounters.

Henman now looks certain to drop down from 16th place in the ATP Champions Race.

Andre Agassi, the defending champion, will head a six-member United States men's team at the Olympic Games in Sydney, but the Wimbledon champion, Pete Sampras, is not going to Australia. Agassi, Todd Martin Michael Chang, and Jeff Tarango will play singles, with Alex O'Brien and Jared Palmer playing in the doubles tournament.

The women's team will include the defending Olympic champion, Lindsay Davenport, the Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, her sister, Serena, and Monica Seles. The Williams sisters will also play doubles.
