Wimbledon 2013: Andy Murray avoids horror draw, but Rafael Nadal joins the Brit and Roger Federer in the same half at Wimbledon

Murray will face either Federer or Nadal in semi-final should they get there if he is to end 77-year wait for a home win

Andy Murray was today drawn in the same half as both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, meaning he will likely come-up against one or the other before potentially facing Novak Djokovic in the final of this year’s Wimbledon tournament if he is to become the first British winner of the men’s singles in 77 years.

Following today’s draw for the two-week event, Murray and Federer were drawn in the same half as expected, but they were joined by fifth seed Rafael Nadal, with the French Open winner still behind fourth seed David Ferrer in the rankings.

It means Murray could face Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in in the quarter-finals who he defeated last week on his way to his third Aegon Championship, and should defeat the world number seven, he is likely to face either Federer or Nadal in the semi-final.

Though the reigning US Open champion will avoid the tricky task of playing three of the top five in the world – this unenviable task falls on Federer’s shoulders – it will still be a tough ask for the Scot to reach the final.

Fresh of claiming his record eighth Roland Garros title, Nadal has looked unstoppable as of late, and if the Spaniard dispatches Federer in the quarter-final where they are likely to meet, Murray will have to produce his very best to reach a second consecutive Wimbledon final.

Murray lost to the Swiss in the final last year, but since then he has claimed his maiden Grand Slam title as well as an Olympic Gold medal, and the world number two looked in superb form as he claimed victory at Queens against Marin Cilic on Sunday.

He is to play Benjamin Becker in the first round on Monday, and he saw off the German on his run to the Queens championship taking the quarter-final 6-4 7-6 (7-3).

Federer has been pitted against Romanian Victor Hanescu while Nadal will play Steve Darcis of Belgium. Meanwhile, in the other half of the draw world number one Djokovic will play Germany’s Florian Mayer, and Djokovic looks to have a straight forward run to the final as long as he sees off Ferrer in the semis.
