The path to an eighth Wimbledon title appears wide open for Roger Federer as the Swiss goes into Friday's semi-final against Tomas Berdych in imperious form and heavily favoured to claim a record-extending 19th grand slam crown.

Federer is the only member of the so-called "big four" left in the draw after Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic all failed to make it past the quarter-finals and few would bet against the 35-year-old from claiming victory on a surface he loves.

The third seed is two victories away from moving clear of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw at the top of the list of men's Wimbledon champions and will meet either Croatia's Marin Cilic or American Sam Querrey should he get past Berdych.

Federer has yet to drop a set at this year's championships and the form guide suggests he will prevail against Berdych, with the Swiss on a seven-match winning streak against the Czech player, who has not beaten him since 2013.

Cilic* 6(6)-7 6-4 0-1 Querrey (*denotes next server)

Querrey can barely get his racket on a strong Cilic return as he loses the first point of this third set on serve. Two more groundstroke errors by the American follow as the seventh seed brings up three more break points... but Querrey saves all three courtesy of two unreturnable serves and a nicely-played drop volley. After three deuces Querrey puts away an easy overhead to hold.

Cilic* 6(6)-7 6-4 2-1 Querrey (*denotes next server)

Querrey begins the game with a double fault. He wins the next point with an unreturnable serve but a forehand error followed by a missed volley sees him fall 15-40 behind. The American saves the first with an ace but can do nothing to fend off the second as he unsuccessfully challenges a Cilic groundstroke to fall behind in this third set.

An unreturnable serve by Cilic starts the game but a backhand winner by Querrey followed by consecutive errors off the ground by the Croatian bring up two break-back points for the 24th seed. He squanders the first with a missed return but takes the second with a short cross-court backhand winner.

Cilic 6(6)-7 6-4 4-4 Querrey* (*denotes next server)

Cilic* 6(6)-7 6-4 4-5 Querrey (*denotes next server)

The pair trade huge groundstroke winners to split the opening two points of the game before Cilic sends a forehand return long. Querrey brings up two game points courtesy of a beautifully-played forehand drop shot. He squanders the first with a groundstroke mistake but takes the second as Cilic sends a backhand down the line long.

Cilic* 6(6)-7 6-4 7-6(3) Querrey (*denotes next server)

The first seven points of the breaker all go with serve before Querrey blinks first, losing two consecutive points courtesy of a couple of unforced errors. Those mistakes bring up three set points for Cilic... and he needs just one as he dispatches a cross-court forehand winner

Cilic 6(6)-7 6-4 7-6(3) 1-2 Querrey* (*denotes next server)

Cilic starts the game with an unreturnable serve but nets a routine forehand to lose the next point. The pair exchange wayward backhands to split the next two points before Cilic nets another forehand to give Querrey a break point... and he takes it as Cilic sends a backhand into the net.

A very loose game from the Croat.
