THIS WEEKEND / Basketball PICK OF THE DAY; adidas streetball Challenge 1995 Battersea Park

Streetball is a simplified version of basketball with its own language, fashion and code. The adidas Streetball Challenge started its British tour in Glasgow at the end of June and has passed through Dublin, Manchester and Coventry on the way to its final leg in London.

The game is simple: two teams, composed of four players, play each other. Players can be of either sex and the first team to reach 16 points wins. With fewer rules than conventional basketball the games are usually fast and furious. The tour has currently been a success for two main reasons; the innovation and creativity derives from the streets and, more importantly, it's fun to play. Teams are pitted against opponents with similar experience so there will be competition for all standards of play. All registered teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games, a free Streetball T-shirt and an assortment of free goodies.

If you don't fancy playing basketball or have left it too late to enter then fear not... there are plenty of other distractions on offer to keep you busy.

There will be a free Street Hockey tournament in the same park and you can also experience first hand an exciting new sport called Snake-boarding. Similar to a conventional Skateboard, the Snake-board enables the user to control the direction of each set of wheels for increased manoeuverability.

For those of you who would prefer to kick a ball, as opposed to shooting one into a hoop, adidas have provided dozens of their revolutionary Predator boot. You will be able to test the boots for free and decide for yourself what, if any, magical powers they possess.

With live music, provided courtesy of Kiss fm DJs, in addition to live bands, there should be something for everyone. Thousands of people should be attending over the two day event.

How to get there: Battersea Park. Go to Battersea Park British Rail station (leaving from Victoria) or take a 45A or 35 bus from Clapham Junction.
