THIS WEEKEND / Mod Pentathlon British Tetrathlon championships Cheltenham

PICK OF THE DAYMore than 100 competitors have entered the British Modern Tetrathlon Championships at Cheltenham this weekend. Among them in the men's event, contending the punishing disciplines of swimming, running, shooting and fencing, is Richard Phelps, the former modern pentathlon world champion who has already qualified for the Olympic Games. He is in fine form with his recent silver medal success at the British epee championships. His main adversary, though, is Greg Whyte, last year's winner. Whyte will be determined to do well as he starts his qualifying for Atlanta next month in Mexico. Julia Allen, the defending champion in the women's section, will have to face Kate Allenby, the high flier in her first year as a senior. Allenby's form this year has won her silver medals at the junior world modern pentathlon championships and the British epee championships. Also in contention are the British squad members, Rachel Wilmot and Michelle Kimberely.

How to get there: Recreation Centre, Pitville Park, Tommy Taylor's Lane, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Tomorrow the fencing starts at 9am, with the swimming at 6.45pm. On Sunday, the shooting is at 9am, with the run at 11.45am. The presentation of awards is at 4pm.
