Pavel Tonkov gave Russia a second Giro d'Italia triumph in three years when the 2,494-mile race from Athens ended in Milan yesterday.

Finishing in the Parco Sempione after more than 100 hours racing, he claimed the maglia rosa of the Giro No 1 by 2min and 43sec over the Italian Enrico Zaina. Abraham Olano of Spain followed in third place.

Three days ago, Tonkov lost the race leadership by 46 hundredths of a second to Olano, the world champion. Then Zaina forced the lead from Olano before Tonkov became the eighth non-Italian to win the event in 10 years. The Italians won 13 of the 22 stages in this year's race.

Sergei Outschakov took yesterday's leg from Sondrio to Milan, outsprinting Alexei Sivakov, with Andrei Teteriouk of Kazakhstan third.
