There is nothing Aidy Boothroyd likes more than a little bit of adversity. Twice in four days his Watford team have overcome testing circumstances to emerge with wins. This victory, only their second at home in the League since October, also maintained their position at the top of the table.

As rain sheeted down on humdrum fare in Hertfordshire, Danny Shittu seemed the lucky one. The Watford defender was already in Ghana, with Nigeria for the Nations Cup. Shittu's replacement, Calum Davenport – on loan from West Ham – was carried off on a stretcher. It was his first game this season.
