Despite my obsession with Game of Thrones and Lucy Worsley’s The First Georgians right now, I am still televisually smitten with MTV’s Catfish. The show that exposes online love fraudsters. The throwaway youth TV show that one’s mind just cannot throw away. Instead, one sits post- episode genuinely saddened that our human need to love and be loved is so destructive. Or that the earth’s supply of gullible optimists may well be infinite.

Readers familiar with the work of Christopher Reid, a witty, dextrous poet drawn to "any whimsical, jejune, inchoate or passing thought", might have assumed that the death of his wife in 2005 would defeat his light touch. They need not have feared.

Just what is the connection in some people's minds between reading and excretion? I knew a reviewer who could scarcely pass a literary judgement without a scatological reference or a quip that the book under review be kept in the smallest room. This tendency culminated in an elaborate metaphor involving stool consistency and tips for light reading matter for a short transit time, to weighty volumes for when you're planning to be in there a while. Ugh! I rang up to protest. "But you see," came the languid response, "in my family, putting a book in the loo is really rather a compliment."

What do women want from men? Oh, not much. Adoration, eternal loyalty, and all the bathroom surfaces to ourselves. Time, babies and the moon on a string. But, after scrutinising the opposite sex for an observation period lasting my entire adult life, and consulting with members of my distinguished coven, I have drawn up this list of friendly hints under the working title "George, Don't Do That: but please do this, and this and this".

Sex is a bit like typing. Anyone can sit down and bash something out using two fingers, but you'll never be as good as someone who uses 10 and took the touch-typing course. This step-by-step guide is the equivalent of the touch-typing course except a lot more fun.

If you can find a bigger Higher Purpose for a room, you can add value to everything: to your house, to your life – you're an altogether more evolved person. It's worked for kitchens, re-thought from utilitarian galley to main entertaining room, heart-of-the-home, all that. Or a secondary bedroom that becomes a home office and develops a rash of shelving and a mass of cable management. There'll be enough computing power to have served a Nineties City broker, and enough presentation equipment for a Nineties ad agency.
