Those magical Centre Court tickets were rather easier for some to procure than for others. Being Scottish helped, naturally: there was Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister. Multiple Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy had a seat, as did the star of ‘The 300’, actor Gerard Butler. The latter had somehow colour co-ordinated his grey jacket with a non-Scot on his right, Hollywood idol Bradley Cooper, which perhaps explains the pair’s smug, sunglassed selfie, captured for posterity on Twitter.

Proof that Asda is run by people who haven't learnt the first rule of dating: never try your luck with anyone hotter than you. Last week an Asda spokesman confirmed that it has dropped Coleen McLoughlin as the face of its George clothing range and is choosing a replacement. "Among the names being considered is Carla Bruni," he revealed. "She's very attractive and a highly stylish person. We feel she would fit in very well with the George look."

After his outburst at referee Mike Riley in midweek, Radio Five Live described Ashley Cole as "divorced from reality" (as opposed to divorced from Cheryl). He is living up to the image of Premier League players as spoilt brats whose salaries somehow put them beyond the law as well as beyond the pale. It's a foul reflection of our culture. You can only hope that the kids watching don't copy him. It's just not cricket.
