Where's the best place to take my family for a beach break in early

Q. I'm currently perusing holidays suitable for a family of five in mid-September: two adults, twins aged two and an eight-month-old baby. We are looking to travel independently to somewhere quiet and picturesque. A nice little beach is most important to us with safe accommodation close by. We went to Scarborough and loved it, but there is no guarantee we will get good weather. We want a flight no more than two hours with a short transfer. Name withheld, Sheffield

Where to go on an affordable, sunny family holiday this summer?

Q. We are a family of four, including two girls of 12 and 14. Work duties mean we can only go away for a week in August. The girls are determined that we take them abroad this year to experience some sunshine and the thrill of going on a plane! We are at a loss as to where to go. Ideally we want somewhere with culture, shops and a pool, but also with places of historical interest close at hand. Corinne, Ashford, Kent

You've seen them going wild on TV - but is this what student holidays

You’d be lying if you said that you’d never woken up the morning after a rough night out, cringing over your wild antics the night before. But what’s worse than being bantered into the ground by all your friends for your drunken frolics? The stone-cold look on your parents' faces when they tap you on the shoulder and tell you they’ve been watching your every mucky move on TV.

Simon Calder's Holiday Helpdesk: How can I find out about train travel

Q I'm having real trouble trying to find any useful websites for train travel in Europe! I only want to know how much, roughly the individual tickets will cost me compared to buying a rail pass. but I just can't find any websites that will help me. Can you recommend anything?
