A port city in Southeast Asia, once considered a provincial backwater, looks set to be one of the hot holiday locations for next year after being named TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Destination on the Rise for 2015.

Da Nang, located on the eastern sea coast of Vietnam, topped the annual awards, which recognise the destinations that have seen the greatest increase in positive feedback and interest from users of the online review site.

In second place is Sihanoukville, Cambodia, while Limassol in Cyprus takes third position. Manaus in Brazil, which recently hosted the FIFA World Cup, and Ao Nang in Thailand, also made the top ten.

A key attraction of Da Nang is its value: an overnight stay in a hotel will cost you an average of £32 and a flight with one-stop comes out at as little as £542. Visitors flock to the regenerated Han riverfront with its spectacular bridges - illuminated at night - and gleaming hotels and restaurants.

James Kay, a TripAdvisor spokesperson, said the results showed visitors are increasingly attracted to Southeast Asia’s less established tourist hotspots. “While this part of the world has been firmly pinned on the travel trail for some time, it’s the region’s lesser known destinations that are now rising up to rival the more established tourist hotspots.”

The list is determined using an algorithm that measures the year-on-year increase in positive reviews placed by members of the public on the TripAdvisor website. Hotel and flight prices are based on averages sourced from TripAdvisor data.
