Donations to The Independent's Christmas appeal for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) could help fund crucial heart monitors for sick children, actor Rupert Everett said today.

The 56-year-old backed Give to GOSH in a special video message filmed as part of a 12 Days of Christmas series of celebrity endorsements.

On the eighth day, he said: “Your donation to the Give to GOSH appeal could help fund portable heart monitors so that the doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital can observe their young patients heartbeats.

“Thank you for supporting our appeal and have a fantastic Christmas.”

Everett, who starred in Shrek and the Julia Roberts hit My Best Friend’s Wedding, joins names including Gillian Anderson, Emilia Fox and John Bishop in supporting our campaign.

A key strand of the appeal aims to help fund a new specialist cardiac unit at GOSH where young patients can stay well while they wait for a heart transplant.
