Brazilian woman auctions her virginity on site 'Virgins Wanted' - take part in our prostitution survey
A 20 year-old woman is offering to lose her virginity to the highest bidder, on a flight from Australia to the US. Here, we ask readers' views on prostitution.
A 20 year-old Brazilian woman is currently auctioning her virginity on the website Virgins Wanted. Catarina Migliorini, said in a statement to the Sao Paulo daily Folha:
“For me, it's not prostitution. When someone does something once in his or her life, this is not considered a profession. If you take a picture and it comes out good, you are not a photographer because of it.”
Interestingly, a man is also selling his virginity too, but bids for his have only reached $1,300 as opposed to Migliorini's which has reached $190,000 (this could raise interesting questions about gender and paying for sex.)
Bids can be made and seen on the site, which filmmaker Justin Sisely is running, and plans to turn the show into a full-length documentary.
The Australian filmmaker originally held auditions in 2009, using posters with “Virgins Wanted” over an image of the Virgin Mary. He planned to hold the project two years ago in Las Vegas, but after risking facing prostitution charges he moved the project back to Australia.
Each virgin will be paid $20,000 and receive 90 percent of their sale price. It's been reported that Migliorini is doing this for the poor, as she will donate a portion of the funds to her area.
The winning bidders will apparently be checked out for STDs, must use a condom, and it will take place aboard a private flight from Australia to the United States, which apparently avoids the prostitution laws.
We're asking a series of questions about prostitution in the survey below. We'll only be publishing aggregated results - and won't be able to view any personal information, so it's completely anonymous.
