Max Hole is right - conductors must do more

So classical music fails to attract young audiences, and it’s the fault of orchestras – that’s the verdict of one of the most powerful people in the music business.

I’m probably less surprised than many musicians at Max Hole’s criticisms. Conductors should talk to their audiences about the evening’s programme, and screens should be installed at some concerts so the public can at least see the conductor’s face.

One does not want an end to traditional classical concerts. But other models can begin to influence them. Innovations are needed urgently if audiences are not to dwindle. If orchestra leaders say there isn’t a problem, perhaps they will make public audience figures, and disclose how many tickets are given away to fill the halls.
