Go, London, go

Funny thing, sport. Sometimes, even when you know it's just a game or a foot race, you find yourself caught up in the eternal human drama of hope and triumph against the odds. So it is with the Olympics. This newspaper had its reservations about the London bid for the 2012 Games because, while we hoped they could be staged in the UK, we thought the capital was the wrong place. But now, as we report today, that London appears to be inching ahead of the favourite, Paris (another capital of a centralised state), the competitive instinct kicks in. We have to cheer. We have to hope that this is our Kelly Holmes moment, coming round the last bend into the final straight before the decision next month. Go, London.
