The football season is under way, promising an unbroken run of adventure until the World Cup next summer. Cheers. The cricket is going well, perhaps as well as it's gone for years, give or take a late start and a bit of rain. A toast! On balance, the satisfactions of leisure seem to outweigh the burdens of modern life. Raise your glasses, please, to routines refreshed by the creative disruptions of holidays. Whoops. Time to praise the judge ("continental-style drinking requires continental-style people") and pass the fizzy water.
