Loosen up, by George!

What is it about sporting events that brings out the worst of British? England are playing in a football match tonight and already the level of snobbery is unbearable. The flag of St George has been appropriated, we hear in tones loaded with class assumptions. Not stolen or borrowed, appropriated. Just as some people seem to think what they regard as "the lower orders" should not wear Burberry. Even if the red cross on white were sported solely by tattooed skinheads in white vans - which it is not - what would be wrong with that? Hang out the extra large drapes; put up the bunting; get in the beer and crisps; lighten up. Enjoy the moment - our rugby heroes have shown how short-lived that can be.
