From Mrs P. Wannell

Sir: Cyril Evans (Letters, 6 May) might like to know that the lad refused entry to the Forces canteen on Crewe station in 1942 is anticipating his 70th birthday next month. Later, Merchant Navy personnel were admitted to Forces canteens and my husband, Jack, was most grateful for Mr Evans' intervention. He survived three "ditchings" altogether and served in the Far East later.

He was delighted to see that he had been remembered after all this time.

Yours sincerely,

PAT WANNELL

Topsham, Devon
