I WAS interested to read that the United States plans to 'appeal to the United Nations to condemn Havana for human rights violations' ('Clinton turns the screw on Castro', 21 August). It is a shame America was not so quick to condemn the appalling atrocities of regimes in Chile, El Salvador and elsewhere that have been propped up by the US.
Perhaps President Clinton wants a return to the torture of the pre-revolutionary Batista regime. Many of the shortages and illnesses suffered by the islanders can be put down to the vindictive US trade embargo which does nothing to help the Cuban people.
