Booksellers such as Waterstone's and Dillons have spent too long listening to Stephen Roach's downsizing philosophies. With their sparsely staffed shopfloors it comes as no surprise that they have created the perfect shoplifter-friendly environment ("Shoplifters find a taste for literature", 12 May).
