Sir: On 5 May 1945 I, too, as a member of a crew of a Liberator aircraft, participated in a successful attack on a U-boat in the Kattegat. We were later told that it carried high-ranking German officers escaping to Sweden.

The salvage of U-boat 534 ('U- boat holds on to secrets as opening is delayed', 25 August), sunk on the same day under similar conditions and carrying 'senior Nazis', caused me to search the lists of U-boat records for those lost on that date. There were five.

It is an exceptional toll. Were these all crossing the Kattegat with high-ranking officials and their loot?

Yours,

FRANKLIN MEDHURST
