Letter: A future for the railways

Sir: The gist of Madsen Pirie's argument ('Running us off the rails', 16 August) seems to be that the fact that the public are adjusting themselves to the rail strikes means that we don't really need railways.

No doubt, if all the motorways were completely coned off three days a week, or shops sold cheese only on Fridays, we should adjust. Does that mean we don't need motorways or cheese?

Yours faithfully,

ROGER JAMES
