LIVERPOOL'S Southgate estate was one of the most expensive estates ever built. The 'plastic houses' pictured cost pounds 10,000 apiece at a time when traditional two-storey housing in Merseyside cost pounds 7,000. The only part of the estate to receive an award was its boilerhouse. James Stirling received his RIBA gold medal for galleries he built abroad.
