Letter: A new home for the duke?
REGARDING the proposed removal of the statue of the Duke of Sutherland. As the applicant for planning consent, I have no desire to see this monument destroyed. He was a Londoner, born in Arlington Street, and it may be that an alternative site could be found in his native land.
There are many kindly English visitors to the Scottish Highland who admire the 'wilderness'. As a result of Neal Ascherson's article ('Blow up the Duke of Sutherland, but leave his limbs among the heather', 9 October) they may become aware of how this state of emptiness came to pass.
