Sir: I am sorry that Hamish McRae ('Tough arithmetic of hitting the tax button', 7 July) has a misleading impression of the work of the Independent Commission on Social Justice. Six months into our inquiry, we are not 'shying away' from any policy proposals, nor ready to 'suggest' new ones.

The commission has not reached any conclusions on taxation nor any other aspect of policy, and is only now begining a detailed analysis of policy options.

In two discussion papers, to be published on 19 July, we will among other things set out our preliminary views on the objectives of reform: we have yet to decide how our objectives can best be met.

Yours faithfully,

GORDON BORRIE

Chairman

Commission on Social Justice

London, WC2

8 July
