Sir: Ros Wynne-Jones (26 April) in describing Jane Austen's popularity says that the British public's favourite ending is, "dear reader, I married him".

Charlotte Bronte, who wrote this line in Jane Eyre, believed Austen's work to be "deficient in breadth and passion": she would not have been amused.
