Sir: You state ("Antarctica: the final holiday frontier", 5 November) that a temperature of -102F (-74.4C ) was recorded at the South Pole in September 1957, making it officially the coldest spot on earth.

The coldest temperature recorded was at the Russian Antarctic research station Vostok. It was -128.6F (-89.2C ), in July 1983.

Whatever the record, it's uncomfortably cold.
