Sir: The Government has won its vote on pit closures in the House of Commons but lost it in the House of Lords. This means that the unelected chamber has represented public opinion more accurately than the elected chamber. Is this a sign of a fault in our system of representative democracy?

Yours sincerely,

RUSSELL
