IF, AS Tony Higgins [the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services chief executive] says, "all the research tells us that performance at A-level is a poor predictor of performance at degree level", why are pupils having to take these exams to be accepted at university? What is a good predictor of performance? That is a bigger story than that the schools lower entrance requirements when a course is not full.
