Sir: In the 1970s fridges had locks (Letters: 30 December; 5, 20 January). They were responsible for the deaths of several children who played in fridges dumped on waste ground. Occasionally a child became trapped inside and suffocated because the locks could be opened only from the outside. Following such incidents manufacturers designed sealable but non-locking fridges.
