Sir: Nelson Cunnington (letter, 11 July) would have us believe that because the product of rocket combustion is water the process is non-polluting. Clever, but not clever enough.

To produce the deoxidised hydrogen fuel, energy is needed, from eg burning coal or oil. The overall effect then becomes one of carbon-dioxide generation.
