Letter: Dissenting Anglicans
Sir: 'Anglicans', claims James Fenton (11 July), 'want their sect upheld by the state'. Do they?
Of the 35 Anglican provinces, only two, those of Canterbury and York, are established. The rest are independent and glad of it. Moreover, he should not assume that, just because the state-
appointed leaders of the Church of England support constitutional links with the state, all members of the church agree with them. On the contrary, many of us would, as Mr Fenton suggests we should, 'rejoice at severance from the state' for the sake of the integrity of both parties.
Yours sincerely,
BOB TORRENS
