From Mr Charles Kazibwe

Sir: David Orr reported in his article "Hopes grow for hostages held by Sierra Leone rebels" (18 April) that Action Aid had "pulled out" of Sierra Leone. While we are taking security precautions, Action Aid has not withdrawn from Sierra Leone and our staff continue to work in two development areas in the Kambia District and neighbouring Sela Limba.

Earlier this year Action Aid briefly suspended operations following an attack in Kambia. However, staff resumed their work as soon as conditions were safe as well as providing relief assistance.

The long-term development programme in the Kambia District is one of Action Aid's largest, covering 54,000 people. And we are committed to working closely with local communities to improve basic health and education facilities and to set up clean water systems.

Yours faithfully,

CHARLES KAZIBWE

Country Director of
