Letter: Gulf crisis
THE 1991 photograph of the immolation of the retreating Iraqi convoy on the road to Basra stands as an arresting image of the brutality and horror of war. A US soldier, on viewing that carnage, remarked that this had been brought about "by the madness of one man". I wasn't sure then to whom he was referring, and now, seven years on, when I hear our Defence Secretary threatening "massive damage" on Iraq, I again wonder where the madness lies.
