Letter: Heartfelt tributes to a giant of the airwaves

Sir: Michael Leapman's obituary of Brian Redhead strangely understates his principal achievement. He records Redhead's arrogance (undeniable) and his love of centre stage. But he ignores the essential humanity of the man. This was the quality that pierced the morning air.

The response to his death has been remarkable. People of all ages and classes have identified in Redhead the simple, old-fashioned virtues of tolerance and fair play, and a real interest in the welfare and the future of his fellow men. His intellect was considerable but he remained, on the air, one of us, our champion.

Yours truly,

JOHN ALCOCK
