Letter: 'House' raises questions of art

Sir: I delayed writing in support of Rachel Whiteread's House because I felt sure that Bow council would finally have the sense to let it stay. This work is one of the best forward-looking pieces of monumental sculpture that I have seen in years, and to my delight it has been recognised as something special by large numbers of visitors.

For the council to be determined to pull it down is philistine. Not only philistine but short- sighted. This sculpture puts the new park at Bow on the map. How sad that the councillors cannot realise the advantages - practical as well as spiritual - of having such an example of living culture right on their doorstep.

Yours faithfully,

ANTHONY CARO
