Letter: Labour did raise Trident issue after Start treaty

I WAS sorry to read your leader 'A pointless Trident' (3 January) in which you castigated the Labour Party for not raising the Trident issue following the Start 2 agreement. This was simply not true. I appeared on the World at One, BBC television news and ITN immediately after the announcement of the new agreement to discuss Labour's view on this very aspect, and issued a statement through the Press Association. I was arguing that this latest Start agreement made nonsense of the Government's plans to increase Britain's nuclear warheads from 192 to 512 with the deployment of Trident. Labour believes that the number should be frozen at 192.
