Letter: Learning to read

Sir: When Hamish McRae ("Britain's Brain Gain", 28 January) writes about Europeans working here more than British people work in the rest of Europe, has he considered the standard of language teaching? If and when there are plenty of jobs in France or Germany, how many British people have the necessary language skills?
