Sir: There is no truth whatever in your reviewer's assertion ("The Enigma Spy", 7 October) that "other hands" wrote the autobiography of my brother, John Cairncross. Every word (except what appears in quotation marks) was written by him before his death, including the mistaken reference to Sir William Strang. The work of editing did not involve fresh writing, but only the addition of material from various drafts he left behind.

Sir ALEC CAIRNCROSS
