Letter: Major's constitutional position
Sir: Getting off the plane, not from outer space but from Geneva, which is in some ways similar, I was impressed to read in Andrew Marr's column today that a return of Baroness Thatcher to No 10 'would signify Britain's collapse into hilarious, but ultimately pitiable, Ruritanian melodrama'.
Britain is already doing a passable imitation of Ruritania. Maggie's return would not only stop this - nobody ever accused her of the kind of majoresque disarray you have now - but she would also provide the perfect leader to rally the increasing voices all over Europe that are rising against the regulated, imperial, ossificial, deloresque Europe that Maastricht represents.
Sincerely,
FRANCIS M. S. PEEL
