Letter: Musician's naivety

Sir: Although one can only applaud Sir Colin Davis's wish (27 May) to counteract the 'lust for destruction in human beings' and the power of money ('money rules the show all over the world'), is he not nave in saying that music is one of the great powers for good? What about military marches? Einstein could not bear to listen to them. What about the guards in Nazi concentration camps listening to quartets played by their starving charges? If only life was as simple as Sir Colin believes.

Yours sincerely,

JELLY WILLIAMS
