Another Leith letter. In his review of Biography of a Buick (Sunday Review, July 26), William praises the author's sense of history. We are told that the novel, set in 1954, features a fictional Vladimir Nabokov 'deflowering one of his students' while writing Lolita. Nabokov finished his novel in 1953. He often wrote in the back seat of an ageing Oldsmobile. No evidence exists of any such relationship with his students. This slander displays a sorry lack of sensitivity towards Nabokov's surviving relatives.
