Letter: Over-wined, overcharged and over there

Sir: D-Day occurred less than three months after I was born. I didn't have to join the armed forces as conscription had ceased by the time I was 18. With maturity, I believe my generation can now appreciate the sacrifice our elders made for us, which enabled all of us to choose our own destiny without having to risk our lives to protect our freedom.

There has not been a more suitable moment to express our thanks to those who gave so much for our futures. This need not be a public spectacle. A few hours spent in Normandy, seeing the beaches and war cemeteries and reflecting on those momentous events, will suffice.

Yours sincerely,

FRASER DAWS
