LETTER : Premature appreciation
From Mr Fritz Spiegl
Sir: The Soviets solved the problem of premature applause in Tchaikovsky's Pathetique by switching the order of the last two movements. This made nonsense of the homosexual suicide note which the last movement was (a fact the commissars strenuously suppressed) and at the same time ended the work on a note of "socialist optimism". Either way, it must be the most banal march in the symphonic repertoire.
Yours faithfully,
Fritz Spiegl
