Letter: Presents of God

Sir: Why does Julia Stent say that her daughter's name means 'a gift from God' ('Two women of Hackney', 3 February)? Claudia comes from the Roman Claudius, which means 'lame'. If she wanted a name to mean 'a gift from God', she should have chosen Godiva or Dorothy or Theodora.

Yours faithfully,

ANNA FREEMAN
