Sir: Having recently spent two days in Chartres, I found Peter Dormer's article very irritating. No doubt, Chartres Cathedral does not 'need' magnificent sculpture and stained glass, and could survive without them, as most English medieval cathedrals have to. But it is undoubtedly enormously enhanced by them, and modern buildings could be, too, if the art was good enough.

Yours faithfully,
