Sir: Your leading article 'Mr Major on a European tide' (30 June) correctly notes that the mood in Europe is 'hostile to further centralisation', and you state that a campaign for 'real subsidiarity' should become the theme of the British presidency.

Since the Maastricht treaty envisages the massive centralisation of power over money and currency, it must follow that the main target of such a campaign must be the plans for economic and monetary union.

Yours faithfully,

DENZIL DAVIES

MP for Llanelli (Lab)

House of Commons

London, SW1
