Letter: Telephone themes

Sir: Your diarist's observation (26 August) that the Italian Inland Revenue's anti-mafia squad telephone system plays the Godfather theme to outside callers reminds me that about seven years ago I had occasion to telephone a newly appointed fellow district manager, whose diligent management reforms had recently uncovered the fact that a small number of his employees had been abstracting equipment from the stores in order to make private arrangements with our customers.

In passing, I suggested that the theme from The Sting was perhaps not the best choice in the circumstances. When I telephoned the following week, the music had been changed. The system was now playing the Moonlight Sonata.

Yours faithfully,
