Letter: The monarchy after Diana

Sir: A Allen (letter, 9 September), in saying "However flawed they may be, at least politicians can be voted in and out of office" has obviously forgotten that Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 through the legitimate democratic process. It took a world war to remove him.

As Winston Churchill wrote in April 1945, "This was would never have come unless under American and modernising pressure, we had driven the Habsburgs out of Austria and Hungary and the Hohenzollerns out of Germany. By making these vacuums we gave the opening for the Hitlerite monster to crawl out of its sewer on to the vacant thrones."

Let us never make the mistake of creating a vacant throne here. We tried it once but the experiment proved disastrous and was brought to an end peacefully after 10 years. Next time (if, God forbid, there is one) we might not be so lucky.
