Letter: There's room in them thar glens

Sir: Your editorial (8 March) is a timely reminder of the reluctance of our Government to allow more than a handful of refugees from the former Yugoslavia to enter this country. Why this should be so is beyond my comprehension.

The Highlands were ethnically cleansed last century to make way for sheep and are now the least populated area in Europe, with a population density of only 9.5 people per square kilometre. There is plenty of elbow-room in the area for refugees.

I, like many other Highlanders, would rather see the glens re-populated - or are they forever to be the domain of bleating sheep and absentee landlords?

Yours faithfully,

DONALD J MacLEOD
